Learn why your Mac is not detecting Luna Display and prompting you to unplug Luna and try again, as well as steps to fix it.

Updated over a week ago

📋 Common causes

  • Your Mac has reached its display limit

  • Luna is plugged into an incompatible port

  • Other USB devices are consuming too much bandwidth.

Oops! Something went wrong. No Luna Display found in 10s matching serial

Why You're Seeing This Error

1. 📺 Display Limit Reached

Luna Display functions as a regular external monitor, and Macs support a limited number of displays based on the model.

How to check your Mac's display support:

Mac Mini Video Support

Solution: Disconnect other external monitors to free up display connections for Luna.

2. 🔌 Incompatible Port Connection

For optimal performance, Luna requires a direct connection to a compatible port without adapters, docks, or hubs.

⚠️ Critical: Mac Studio and M4 Mac Mini users use rear Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports only

  • Front USB-C ports don't support display output

  • This will always cause the "No Luna Display Found" error

Mac Studio Ports

⚠️ Critical: iMac users use ports labeled "Thunderbolt/USB 4"

  • Typically labeled with a lightning bolt symbol

  • Standard USB-C ports on iMacs do not support display output

  • Only Thunderbolt-capable ports will work with Luna

3. 🚫 Bandwidth Interference

Other USB or Thunderbolt devices may consume excessive bandwidth, preventing Luna from connecting.

Intel Mac considerations

  • Thunderbolt ports are grouped in pairs that share bandwidth

  • High-resolution monitors, docks, or external drives can monopolize resources

  • This leaves insufficient bandwidth for Luna Display

Quick Fixes

1. 🔄 Unplug Other Devices

  • Remove all unnecessary USB/Thunderbolt devices

  • Test Luna connection with minimal devices connected

  • Gradually reconnect devices to identify conflicts

2. ↔️ Switch Ports

  • Try different Thunderbolt ports on your Mac

  • Avoid ports currently used by high-bandwidth devices

  • Test each available display-capable port systematically

3. Verify Port Compatibility

  • Mac Studio/M4 Mac Mini: Use rear Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports exclusively

  • iMac: Confirm you're using Thunderbolt/USB 4 labeled ports

  • All Macs: Avoid USB-C ports that don't support display output

Advanced Troubleshooting

🔋 Power Management

  • Reset SMC (System Management Controller) on Intel Macs

  • Restart your Mac to refresh Thunderbolt bus

  • Check for macOS updates that may resolve display issues

📊 Bandwidth Optimization

  • Prioritize Luna Display by disconnecting external storage during use

  • Use lower resolution settings on other connected displays

  • Consider using separate Thunderbolt buses for different device types

🖥️ Display Detection

  • Open System Settings > Displays to verify connected displays

  • Check if Luna appears as an unrecognized display

  • Force display detection: hold Option while clicking Detect Displays

🔧 Hardware Verification

  • Test Luna on a different Mac (if available) to rule out hardware issues

  • Try a different Thunderbolt cable

  • Ensure Luna's firmware is up to date

Mac Model-Specific Guidance

M1/M2 MacBooks:

  • Support 1-2 external displays (varies by model)

  • Use native Thunderbolt ports for best results

Intel MacBooks:

  • Generally support 2+ external displays

  • May require specific port configurations for multiple displays

Mac Pro:

  • Supports numerous displays

  • Check specific Thunderbolt card capabilities

💡 Tip: Create a "Luna setup" by noting which port and configuration works best, then use the same setup each time.
