Why are my notifications missing when using Luna Display on Mac?

Learn how to customize how your notifications behave when Luna Display is in use.

📋 Why notifications disappear: Since Luna Display uses screen recording technology, macOS sometimes blocks notifications and sounds as a privacy feature. This can be resolved by adjusting notification settings based on your macOS version.

Understanding the Issue

🔒 Screen Recording Privacy Protection

  • macOS treats Luna Display as screen recording/mirroring

  • System automatically disables notifications during "mirroring" to protect privacy

  • This affects both visual notifications and notification sounds

Solutions by macOS Version

🍎 macOS Big Sur or Older

Step 1: Configure Do Not Disturb

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Notifications > Do Not Disturb

  2. Turn off Do Not Disturb

  3. Uncheck "When mirroring or to TVs and projectors"

Step 2: Reset Notification Center (if needed)

  1. Open Spotlight (Cmd + Spacebar)

  2. Search for Activity Monitor

  3. Find Notification Center in the process list

  4. Select it and click the X button to stop the process

  5. macOS will automatically restart Notification Center

🆕 macOS Monterey or Newer

Step 1: Enable App-Specific Notifications

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Notifications

  2. Select each app you want notifications from

  3. Ensure both options are checked:

    • "Allow Notifications"

    • "When mirroring or sharing the display"

🎯 Advanced Settings

Focus Mode Considerations

  • Create a custom Focus mode for Luna Display usage

  • Allow specific apps and contacts during this mode

  • Schedule Focus modes to avoid conflicts

Notification Scheduling

  • Check Notification Summary settings

  • Ensure time-sensitive notifications aren't grouped

  • Configure Scheduled Summary appropriately

⚠️ Important: Some enterprise or school-managed Macs may have additional restrictions that prevent notification modifications. Contact your IT administrator if settings appear locked or grayed out.

Verification Steps

Test Your Configuration

  1. Send yourself a test notification (email, message, etc.)

  2. Verify both visual and audio notifications appear

  3. Test during active Luna Display session

  4. Check multiple app types for consistency

🔍 Monitor Notification Center

  • Swipe from right edge of screen to open Notification Center

  • Verify recent notifications appear in history

  • Check if notifications are being received but not displayed

💡 Tip: Create a dedicated user account for Luna Display sessions with optimized notification settings if you frequently switch between mirrored and non-mirrored usage.
