📋 Barrel Rotation basics:

  • Requirement: Astropad Studio 5.4 or later & Apple Pencil Pro

  • Setup needed: Enable in each app's brush settings individually

  • Supported apps:

    • Photoshop

    • Illustrator

    • Krita (Windows Only)

    • ClipStudio (Windows only)

🎨 What is Barrel Rotation?

The Apple Pencil Pro includes barrel rotation, which allows your cursor or brush to rotate in real time as you twist your pencil. Astropad Studio supports this feature in version 5.4 and later!

🖌️ How to Enable Barrel Rotation in Each App

Adobe Photoshop CC

  1. Choose a brush you want to use with barrel rotation

  2. Click the brush settings icon (brush with bulleted list in default layout)

  3. In settings panel, click Shape Dynamics, then set Angle Jitter Control to Rotation

⚠️ Note: This setting must be applied to each brush individually.

Adobe Illustrator CC

Barrel rotation can control brush angle, roundness, or width depending on brush type:

  1. Open Brushes window: Go to Window > Brushes or press F5

  2. Choose your brush, click the hamburger menu ☰ and select Brush Options

  3. Set rotation control: Use the dropdown next to your desired setting (Angle, Roundness, Size, or Width) and choose Rotation

Krita and ClipStudio (Windows Only)

⚠️ Before starting: Disable High Resolution Input in Astropad Studio's Advanced Settings on Windows.

  1. Choose your desired brush

  2. Open Brush Editor (brush stroke and list icon in top-left toolbar)

  3. Select Rotation from left menu and enable it in brush settings on the right

🔄 Troubleshooting

Brush rotating in the wrong direction?

If rotating your pencil right causes the brush to turn left (or vice versa), invert the rotation curve in either:

  • The Brush Editor

  • Tablet Settings in Krita's configuration menu

💡 Fix: Your curve should slope downward to -180 and 360 instead of upward to 180.

Still having issues?

Double-check:

  • You're on Astropad Studio version 5.4 or newer

  • Your app and Apple Pencil Pro firmware are fully updated
