Why do I only see my primary Mac's wallpaper on my second display?

What it means when your secondary device shows the wallpaper of your primary computer when connected with Luna Display

Updated over a month ago

Quick Answer

✅ Luna Display is working properly, and your secondary device is now functioning as a second display for your primary computer.

Why does this happen?

By default, Luna Display makes your secondary device an extended display for your primary computer, and it will behave as if you have connected a normal monitor. When you connect a second monitor as an extended display, it acts like an expansion of your desktop workspace; not a copy of it.

Your wallpaper appears on the new monitor because it's a fresh, empty desktop space. Any open windows and programs will still be on your original monitor where you left them.

🖥️ To use the second screen, you simply drag windows from your first monitor over to it.

Where is my dock and desktop icons?

Your Mac's dock, menu items, and desktop content will automatically be on whichever display you have set as the main display in your primary Mac's Display settings. These items cannot display on both devices while Luna is set to extend to your secondary device due to macOS limitations; they will remain on the primary device.

There are two ways to change this behavior, outlined below.

🪞Mirror displays

Setting your devices to mirror will make your secondary device display the exact same content that is on your primary device; dock and menu items included.

🐱Luna Display Settings

  • Open the Luna Display settings on the primary Mac by clicking Luna Display in the top left corner of the desktop in the Apple menu

  • Click Settings...

  • In the Luna Display settings, select the Luna Display tab

  • Change the dropdown menu labeled Set up Luna as: to Mirror displays

🔁 Set your secondary device as the main display

If you would like to keep the extended display space, but you would like your dock and program windows to open automatically on the secondary device connected through Luna Display, you can instead set the secondary device as the main display in the macOS settings.

We recommend adjusting the display settings in the Luna Display app before doing so to ensure that Luna does not override any changes you make.

🐱Luna Display Settings

  • Open the Luna Display settings on the primary Mac by clicking Luna Display in the top left corner of the desktop in the Apple menu

  • Click Settings...

  • In the Luna Display settings, select the Luna Display tab

  • Change the dropdown menu labeled Set up Luna as: to Do not change system settings

🍏macOS Settings

  • Open the Display settings on your primary Mac

  • Click on Arrangement

  • Drag the white bar at the top of pictured displays to the one you would like to be your main display.

The display that is set as the main display in these settings will be the one that your dock and menu and desktop items will be on. This display will also be the one that your program windows automatically open on.
