How to Check Your Luna Display Connection Type

Find out which connection type your Luna Display is using by checking the Connection Options box in your Luna app

Updated over a week ago

Quick Answer

  • Open Luna Display app on your Mac

  • Look at top-right corner for the "Connection Options" box

  • Your current connection type will be displayed (Peer-to-Peer, Wi-Fi, USB, etc.)

  • Only Wi-Fi and Peer-to-Peer are manual options; cable connections are automatic

Not sure how your Luna Display is connected? No worries! In Luna Display 5.3 and later, it's super easy to see exactly what connection type you're using. This helps you troubleshoot issues and optimize your setup.

Where to Find Your Connection Type

The Connection Options box shows your current connection and lets you switch between available options.

  1. Open Luna Display on your main Mac

  2. Look at the top-right of the Luna window

  3. Find the "Connection Options" section - this shows your active connection

  4. Click on the dropdown to select a wireless connection option

When you're using a cable connection (USB, Thunderbolt, or Ethernet), you'll see the connection type in the corner. Cable connections work automatically!

Connection Types Explained

Wireless Connections

Peer-to-Peer Connection

Direct device-to-device connection without needing Wi-Fi network

Wi-Fi Connection

Connection through your wireless network

  • Works on all supported devices (Mac, PC, iPad)

  • Default option when no cable is used and Peer-to-Peer isn't available

  • Both devices must be on the same network

Cable Connections

USB Connection

Direct cable connection between devices

  • Works for Mac-to-iPad or Mac-to-Mac

  • Available in Luna 5.3+ only

  • Requires macOS 10.15+ on both devices

  • Need a supported USB cable

Thunderbolt Connection

High-speed cable connection

  • Supported for Mac-to-Mac or PC-to-Mac

  • Fastest connection method available

  • May sometimes display as "USB" in the menu (still works normally)

Ethernet Connection

Wired network connection

  • Works for Mac-to-Mac or PC-to-Mac

  • Stable, network-based connection

  • Requires Ethernet cables and network setup

What Your Connection Menu Looks Like

Wireless connections will show a dropdown menu where you can choose between:

  • Peer-to-Peer (if available)

  • Wi-Fi

Cable connections appear automatically when detected:

  • USB, Thunderbolt, or Ethernet will display in the connection area

  • No dropdown needed - it just works when plugged in

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

Not seeing the connection you expect?

  • Restart both devices completely

  • Try a different cable if using wired connection

  • Complete a Luna Factory Reset if problems persist

Using Ethernet or Thunderbolt but it's not working?

Connection showing as wrong type?

  • USB and Thunderbolt sometimes display as each other

  • As long as a cable connection appears, it should work normally

💡 Pro Tip: Knowing your connection type helps you troubleshoot faster! Cable connections are usually more stable, while wireless gives you more flexibility.
