Can I fix mouse and keyboard lag in Astropad Studio on Mac?

How to adjust macOS settings that can contribute to unpredictable mouse and keyboard behavior and lag.

Updated over 2 months ago

If your keyboard and mouse aren't responding correctly or at all, specific iPad and Mac settings may be interfering with Astropad Studio input.

🚫 Disable Full Keyboard Access

Full Keyboard Access enables Mac/iPad control via key commands but can block input in Astropad Studio.

🖥️ On Mac

  1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences)

  2. Click Accessibility in the sidebar

  3. Select Keyboard

  4. Choose Full Keyboard Access

  5. Toggle the switch to Off

📱 On iPad

  1. Open Settings on your iPad

  2. Tap Accessibility > Keyboards

  3. Toggle Full Keyboard Access off

💻 Disable Universal Control

Universal Control can interfere with input devices when using Luna Display or Astropad Studio.

🖥️ On Mac

  1. Go to System Settings (or System Preferences)

  2. Select Displays

  3. Click Advanced or Universal Control in the lower right corner

  4. Toggle off all Universal Control options:

    • "Allow your pointer and keyboard to move between any nearby Mac or iPad"

    • "Push through the edge of a display to connect a nearby Mac or iPad"

    • "Automatically reconnect to any nearby Mac or iPad"

📱 On iPad

  1. Open Settings

  2. Go to General > AirPlay & Handoff

  3. Turn off Cursor and Keyboard

🛠️ Additional Troubleshooting Steps

🔄 Restart Connection

  • Disconnect and reconnect Astropad Studio

  • Close and reopen the Astropad Studio apps

  • Restart both devices if issues persist

📶 Check Network Quality

  • Ensure strong Wi-Fi signal on both devices

  • Consider using USB connection for reduced latency

  • Close bandwidth-heavy applications

⚙️ Optimize Performance Settings

  • Disable visual effects on Mac (System Settings > Accessibility > Display > Reduce Motion)

  • Close unnecessary background applications

⌨️ Keyboard-Specific Solutions

  • Verify keyboard layout matches system settings

  • Reset keyboard dictionary: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary

  • Check for stuck modifier keys (Command, Option, etc.)

💡Tip: If lag persists, try using a USB connection instead of Wi-Fi for the most responsive experience.
